We believe theatre is a powerful way to deliver an anti-racism message
and we are sharing our resources so that other schools can develop their
own scenes and perform for their school or community.
Stand Up Stand By was developed by students at Orara High School and
Dave Houston from Full On Theatre, for All One Under the Sun.
As part of the development, all cast and creative team participated in
anti-racism education with a focus on bystander intervention delivered by
Zarlasht Sawari from the Challenging Racism project at Western Sydney
University. All scenes were created with a view to educate other young
people on the role of the bystander in a racist incident and how to take
action when it is safe to do so.
The scenes were created from lived experience of cast members or
experiences of their friends and family and woven together with
movement, song and spoken word.
Our first performance was at Coffs Harbour Regional Conservatorium for
local community, friends and family in June 2022. In 2023 a mostly new
cast of young people worked further on the script including creating
additional scenes and refining the script.
The show was then performed to great acclaim at Jetty Theatre, Coffs
Harbour and Riverside Theatre, Parramatta for both school students and
We invite you to use our script as a starting point to create your own
scenes to make it relevant to your own stories and experiences. Teacher’s
resources and lessons plans are included to help teachers facilitate the
process. Please let us know when you do so we can be inspired by your
work and understand how far our show has reached.
